In the San Francisco Bay Area, All Power Labs (Berkeley) began in 2008 with the open-source Gasifier Experimenter’s Kit (GEK): free CAD files, workshops, and a modular downdraft reactor intended for research and DIY. The project productized into the GEK Power Pallet—compact, sensor-controlled 10–20 kW (and later larger) integrated gasifier–engine–generator packages sold commercially.
Around 2011–2012 the topic resurfaced among off-grid, preparedness, and YouTube communities. Engineer775 (Practical Preppers) published numerous farm-scale and generator demonstrations; a wood-gas system appeared on Doomsday Preppers Season 2 (Scott Hunt). Other builders and authors (including Wayne Keith’s high-mileage vehicle work and Ben Peterson’s Wood Gasifier Builder’s Bible) circulated plans and videos. “SouthernPrepper” and similar channels were part of that wave of small-scale fabrication and occasional sales.
Catalysts and chemistry is your friend in these projects. Copper wool is a cheaper catalyst for this. Limestone also. Limestone in the filter will neutralize the wood vinegar coming across. Zeolyte can also help.

Licensing and current status
The designs were released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license for personal and non-commercial use. Commercial manufacturing or resale required a separate licensing agreement with All Power Labs.
