The NSA Playset: RF Retroreflectors
Michael Ossmann GREAT SCOTT GADGETS
Of all the technologies revealed in the NSA ANT catalog, perhaps the most exotic is the use of RF retroreflectors for over-the-air surveillance. These tiny implants, without any power supply, transmit information intercepted from digital or analog communications when irradiated by radio signals from an outside source. This modern class of radar eavesdropping technology has never been demonstrated in public before today. I've constructed and tested my own RF retroreflectors, and I'll show you how they work and how easy they are to build with modest soldering skills. I'll even bring along some fully assembled units to give away. Now you can add RF retroreflectors to your own NSA Playset and play along with the NSA!

DIY Drone Resiliency Against Countermeasures

For those in the advanced class, there is a interesting article to think about developing a more countermeasure resistant drone.

American Political Show

While pleased with the poll, Trump quickly acknowledges, “It’s an honor but it’s a long-long race.” He then goes on to push back against some of the establishment Republicans who have joined with the Mainstream Media and other Democrats in attacking Mr. Trump’s willingness to openly discuss what many privately view as the absolute truth.

Never have I seen a front running candidate in the lead at this stage in the race get the nomination.

At this point it is political masturbation.

The oligarchs will make their choice known soon.

The real question is, what are YOU going to do?

DIY Radar

Uploaded on Oct 29, 2011
Speaker: Michael Scarito

Radar is used extensively by the military, police, weather, air travel, and maritime industries - why not you? Come learn how to build a radar imaging system on the cheap! This talk will explain the basics of how radar works as well as how to measure range and velocity of your chosen targets. You will learn how to use synthetic aperture techniques to generate a two- or even three-dimensional image. The hardware and software design will be totally opened up so you can go home and build your own system.

The talk will try to run through the basics pretty fast, so some knowledge of electronics or basic physics might help, but is not required! Regardless of your background, you will see the capabilities of a modern home-built radar system and hopefully get some ideas for your own uses.

Lurch Didn't Say Anything About This!

Reposted with permissinon from TES email newsletter

Lurch didn’t say anything about this!

Iran’s foreign minister and lead negotiator in nuclear talks said that under the terms of the recently inked accord, the Islamic Republic is permitted to violate current embargoes on the shipment of arms and construction of missiles, according to recent comments made before Iran’s parliament.

What’s up with that Lurch?!

The CNC Mill Is Here!

I'll have some photos later this week of the sun and stars align of the CNC mill.

I was getting frustrated the last 2 months here at the shop.  One supplier I had such high hopes for, has fallen behind big time.  2 months and not one completed 3D printer.  A big batch sitting in the shop waiting on this guy to do his thing.

This is why I have really taken an interest in the CNC mills.  I built a couple different designs, lacking a mill in the first place, I was kind of limited to want I could laser, CNC bend and 3D print.

Needless to say, I did build a CNC router last week from plywood.  Found a design on thingiverse, massaged the files and sent to laser.  Turned out it had to be cut on a router not a laser so it took a few days to get it done.

5 trips across town, and $300 later I got another CNC.

The plywood mill.

The real mill coming on the other hand is made from water jet steel, big 16mm linear guides, and can handle a 2hp spindle. No price set for it yet, but it will be competitive with china machines, with a bump in quality.

Critique of the New Torchmate CNC Table

I got this in the email this morning.

Torchmate whom I have been a customer of; is out flogging a 'new' machine.

Except there is nothing innovative about it.  It's profile aluminum, angle brackets, standard linear guides, and a controller that hasn't much changed in the last 6 years.

They are out flogging the idea of "look ahead" firmware on the controller, but this has been on open source 3D printer firmware for years.

It has no touch screen, will not run code from a SD card, has no wifi, and you gotta supply a computer with it to run over USB.

Just not impressed.

The Fastbot BBP controller has all of the above capabilities and costs $125.  The Torchmate controller is over $500 last time I looked.

The prices for advanced industrial automation equipment is dropping fast and improv, emits are happening at a breakneck pace.  Yet Torchmate is not keeping up.

It is most definitely not the same company it was before Lincoln Electric bought them out.
